The closest real trail riding to our gate, and a local favorite. More than eight miles of quiet, sandy woodland trails wind above the Patuxent, and the lot is sized for trailers — as riders like to say, you do not have to back up. The narrow, winding blue trail is the one regulars rave about.
Good to know: Sand & dirt; gentle. Port-a-john at the boat ramp. Closest option to Harwood.

2. Merkle Natural Resources Management Area
Upper Marlboro, MD · ~25 min · Beginner · Roadside / lot access
Just upriver from Jug Bay, Merkle is open and gentle — a two-mile stretch of the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area route is open to horses, linking into the wider Patuxent River Park lands. Big-sky meadows, geese on the water, and an easy pace make it a lovely, low-key outing.
Good to know: Flat, easy going; part of a 4-mile hike/bike/ride/drive route from Patuxent River Park.

3. Patapsco Valley State Park

The big one. Patapsco sprawls along its namesake river with 170-plus miles of trail and roughly eleven routes open to horses across its areas. Rocky climbs, river crossings and real elevation reward a fit horse and a confident rider — this is where you go to feel like you have been somewhere.
Good to know: Hilly, rocky, varied; check the wet-weather closures before you load up.

4. Seneca Creek S.P. & Schaeffer Farm Trails

A perennial pick in reader polls of Maryland riders. Between Seneca Creek and the adjoining Schaeffer Farm system you will find 50-plus miles of well-marked, rolling trail through woods and farmland — enough to ride a different loop every visit.
Good to know: Rolling, well-marked; popular, so expect company on weekends.

5. Gunpowder Falls State Park — Sweet Air

The Sweet Air area sets aside about eighteen miles of trail for riders, with long sight-lines over fields and river bottom. It is a sightseer's ride — steady, pretty, and a little wild at the edges.
Good to know: Mixed woods and field; gentle to moderate. Quietest midweek.

6. Patuxent River State Park (Hipsley Mill)

Wild and undeveloped — 6,700 acres and 25-plus miles of natural-surface trail with stream crossings and few amenities. Bring everything you need and a horse that is sure of foot; the reward is genuine solitude.
Good to know: Rugged, natural; minimal facilities — carry water and a map.

7. Anne Arundel County Trails (Pasadena)

Closer to home, the county opens unpaved trails to horses at the Lake Shore Athletic Complex and the Magothy Greenway at Looper's Field. Handy, well-kept and gentle — just mind the county rules: sunrise to sunset, walk only, designated trails, and no riding when the ground is wet.
Good to know: Easy, maintained; trailer parking in the gated upper lot at Lake Shore.
